International Swim Fashion Week – Curacao, Dutch Caribbean

The first International Swim Fashion Week is about to kick off (Feb 19-22) at the Santa Barbara Beach & Golf Resort on the stunning island of Curacao in the Dutch Caribbean. Why am I so excited about this? My label Island State is the ONLY swimwear label from Australia to be walking to catwalk in this event! Proud? Just a little. Excited? Bursting!

While I’m stuck here in a dust storm in Dubai, I’ll be dreaming of the white sand beaches and clear blue waters of Curacao and pretending that I’m there to watch the models take to the catwalk in my swim and resort wear.

This fashion filled weekend starts off with an exclusive reception party benefitting a local charity, followed by VIP glamour events, catwalk shows, cocktail parties, pop up shops and a chilled beachside BBQ on the resorts private beach.. It couldn’t be better if it tried!

Bobby Harris, founder of Fashion Show VIP (the events host) says, ““With our knowledge of the fashion industry and Santa Barbara Beach & Golf Resort’s elegance and exclusive location, we have no doubt that the first ever International Swim Fashion Week will be a success. We look forward to this collaboration and delivering an unforgettable weekend of events and high fashion to the island of Curaçao.”

Island State will be showcased alongside other international swimwear labels including Phax Swimwear from Colombia, Sirenes de Soleil from the USA, and Aqua Vita, just to name a few. No one makes swimwear look better than a former Victorias Secret model and ISFW has Tika Camaj gracing the catwalk among other big names in modelling like Rachel Hine and Kyra Kelly.

Island State came to life in late 2013. It was a tiny little dream of mine to create something on which I could showcase some of the beautiful images I had taken on my travels across the globe. Cam encouraged me to take the leap and was my sounding board through the whole creative process from image selection to design to manufacturers and the back and forth with sample production. Needless to say I couldn’t have done it without him!

Each piece is created with a snapshot of a beautiful place in the world. We have 4 styles with 2 unique prints in each. Island State is the only label to create swimwear with photographic prints in the way we do. In the current collection we have images from The Greek Islands, Italy, New York City & Marrakech, Morocco.. just to name a few! Every piece has its own story behind the image and that makes them all as individual as the the babe wearing it. I left my job as a flight attendant after several years to focus solely on the label. (Ladies.. this something else to add your “dream man” list. He must be supportive! Although I do think I really hit the jackpot with Cam, he may just be one in a million! Sorry!)

Island State hit the shelves of some boutique stores in 2014 and was picked up by Australia’s leading online fashion retailer The Iconic in the same year. The US fell in love and Island State was featured in giveaways on LA’s KiiS FM with Ryan Seacrest and received some amazing editorials in several fashion blogs across the USA. I was blown away by the response to the swimwear and released our first resort wear collection summer last year. We’ve been going from strength to strength and have just received our new samples for our next collection.
2015 has been off to an amazing start and we’re excited to say we’ll be stocked internationally very soon!

I can’t wait to see the imagery from the catwalk tonight! We both feel completely grateful to have been asked to be involved in such a wonderful event. A massive thank you to everyone involved and of course to Cam for his unwavering support!

Make sure you check out the label and keep an eye out for our new collection!
